Beginning the first day of the Hebrew month of Elul, Synagogues the world over will begin sounding the Shofar each morning until the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Of course, the Shofar is a highlight of the Rosh Hashanah services as well.

                  As Rav Saadyah Gaon of the tenth century explains, the unique sound of the Shofar warns us of the coming Day of Judgment, inspires us to amend our lives, stirs us to return to Hashem and provides us with hope for the restoration of our People.

                   It is the sound of the battle alarm and it proclaims the sovereignty of the Creator. It is identified with the resurrection of the dead in the coming Messianic era and it was heard at Mt. Sinai when we received the Torah.

                   The Shofar provides us with so much emotion and stirring of the soul that one can't help but be drawn closer to Hashem and return to the way of life He has chosen for us.
